What to Expect Sophia X Labster

Earlier this month Sophia announced their new collaboration with Labster. Labster is a virtual lab (computer simulated) science lab platform. No more “kits” in the mail- this is full computer simulation. The first two options are Introduction to Chemistry Lab and Human Biology Lab, each worth 1 ACE college credit and available with or without their companion courses.

Sophia.org

Cost: $99/month unlimited courses may be completed, limit 2 enrollments at a time.

Sophia Biology and Chemistry classes don’t automatically include labs. While you can take as many Sophia courses as you’d like each month with your membership, you are only allowed to be active in two courses at a time. Taking this lab course along with the lecture course will occupy your two-course limit. So, Biology AND Biology Lab will count as 2 courses in your monthly subscription.

Human Biology with Lab (3+1 ACE college credits, 1 high school honors science credit)

Introduction to Chemistry with Lab (3+1 ACE college credits, 1 high school honors science credit)

When you visit Sophia’s website you can download any syllabus, but you’ll have to register your email address each time. As a point of principle, I find it annoying when companies do that, so I used my email to get the lab files for you so you don’t have to give them your email address. See below.

You can get 10% off your enrollment if you use code HS4CC23 at checkout.

Human Biology Lab

ACE Credit®-recommended for 1.0 semester credit

Course description

Sophia’s science lab courses are designed to be used with the accompanying lecture course, creating a robust investigation and journey into the natural sciences. It’s recommended that you complete this Human Biology Lab course simultaneously with Human Biology, so you fully experience the application and real-world relevance of the subject.

In this lab course, you’ll apply the scientific method, explore phenomena, and exercise critical thinking skills using virtual lab simulations from Labster, a leader in interactive science. All labs are performed online without any need for specialized science equipment.

This lab course reinforces topics from the lecture course such as the molecular and cellular basis of life, genetics, organ systems, and the impact of nutrition and exercise on human health.

To meet the lab requirement, you’ll be expected to write lab reports and answer formative quiz questions as you advance through the course. Important! Please plan ahead. While you can take as many Sophia courses as you’d like each month with your membership, you are only allowed to be active in two courses at a time. Taking this lab course along with the lecture course will occupy your two-course limit. This course requires a reliable internet connection and a laptop or desktop computer that meets minimum specifications.

GRADING: This is a pass/fail course. Students must complete 14 Labster simulations with embedded formative quiz questions and 2 Touchstones (project-based or written assessments) with an overall score of 70% or better.
