What you need to know about Straighterline for your Homeschooling for College Credit program
About: Straighterline is a business, not a college. The courses are evaluated by a third-party (ACE) who makes the college credit recommendation. To ensure your college accepts ACE credit, you’ll want to look at the participating college list at the bottom of this page. Since 2012, my family has used many Straighterline courses. In 2025, I discovered their platform underwent an amazing upgrade and was so impressed by the new format that I asked if they would partner with us. Homeschooling for College Credit is the FIRST partner they have ever had, and we are honored to offer information about their courses as an alternative to a traditional dual enrollment course.
Enrollment: Your student can be any age, any grade. We recommend the courses for students in high school, specifically grades 10-12. There is no placement testing or transcript required. The parent can create an account, but it must be in the student’s name because it will be tied to the college credit earned.
Pricing: You pay a monthly subscription fee of $99 per user. Then, you purchase courses à la carte as needed. Digital textbooks & course materials are included in the price. 10 hours of live tutoring is included with every course purchase, and can be rolled over if unused. Please note that science courses may require the purchase of a lab kit at an additional cost. If you use a promotional code from HS4CC, we will receive compensation and you will receive a discount.
Classes: Classes are self-paced, but the subscription model encourages you to move quickly to save money. As a homeschool parent, my recommendation is that you use only Straighterline classes (1-3 at a time) in any given month rather than bringing them into a full year-long homeschool schedule. This approach cuts down the number of months needed to complete a course, which is a more cost-effective way to earn college credit.
Potential: Straighterline offers over 70 courses for college credit.
Straighterline Courses (2025)
Cost: Cost is difficult to determine since the pace you complete the course determines the cost. Students are incentivized to work quickly because the faster you complete the course, the cheaper it is. The minimum cost to complete any course is one month ($99) plus the cost of the course(s) you choose. Straighterline’s marketing material suggests you can complete 1 course in a month, but if you clear your schedule and work on 1 course at a time, you can complete a course in a week or two.
“My high school teens completed an average of 1-2 courses per month when I added a subject to their school day, but did 3 courses in a month when it was their “only school” subject for the month.”
“Just wanted to share some thoughts I had on StraighterLine’s ENG101. The course page is super easy to navigate. You can see your capstones and checkpoints all laid out clearly, which I liked. I really liked that each section shows your progress as a fraction and percentage, but it is probably motivating to see that number go up. Each section comes with writing examples and resources, and the rubrics are very detailed, which is nice for knowing exactly what they’re looking for.” Audra, HS4CC Parent & Volunteer
Here are two of my older posts that show you how I used Straighterline in my homeschool. The strategy I used still works today but now the platform is better and their course list is much better.
