Universal Learner Courses are online college classes from Arizona State University designed to make college learning more accessible. They are “open enrollment,” allowing any homeschool student to enroll without placement tests, age or grade level requirements, or a high school transcript.

A major benefit of using ASU Universal Learner Courses is that each student decides at the end of the class whether to report their grade on the ASU transcript. Students have the power to decide if they want this course as part of their permanent record – something that no other university in the country offers as an option.

Homeschool students can access discounted pricing by enrolling through HS4CC Academy, while any learner (including adults) can also enroll directly through ASU’s website.

Note: ASU does not allow learners to have discounted pricing through HS4CC Academy and enroll directly through the ASU website – learners can choose either of the two options, but not both.

1. ASURITE is your ASU user ID. If you are a new user of ASU courses, you’ll get an ASURITE when you enroll for the first time.
2. If you’re enrolling directly with ASU, ASU will generate your ID number.
3. If you’re enrolling directly through HS4CC Academy, we will get the ID for you. If you have an ASURITE from previous enrollment and are switching to HS4CC Academy, you’ll provide your number when you enroll and we will handle the rest. we will handle the switch for you.
4. Once you have an ASURITE, you’ll need to verify your account with a photo ID. Homeschool students can use any government-issued ID, a homeschool ID, a military or DoD or dependent ID, a passport/passport ID, etc.
5. Once your ASURITE is verified, you can sign up for classes!

Session-based courses will appear in your learner dashboard on their start date. On-demand courses will appear in your learner dashboard immediately as your enrollment is processed.

This isn’t a “one size fits all” answer, but there are a few things to keep in mind as you consider your options.

1. Choose a class that interests your student. Enjoyment and success with a first class are the greatest predictors of success.  Whether or not a course will transfer perfectly or can be used later in a degree are factors for selecting future courses, something that is more likely if you start with a motivated student.
2. General education courses (English, Math, Social Science, Science) tend to transfer best when you’re not sure of your student’s plans after high school.
3. Choose easier classes to build confidence. College classes are going to require work, make no mistake, but some ASU classes are considered “easier” by our HS4CC parents, and an early win goes a long way for motivation later.
4. Check the “high school graduation” box. If your state has high school graduation requirements, each ASU course = 1 high school credit. You can accumulate a lot of high school (and college) credit this way in half the time.

Session-based courses have start and end dates, weekly assignments with due dates, and an instructor-set pace. Session-based courses can be offered as 8-week or 16-week programs, depending on the semester. The course is the same, but an 8-week course moves twice as fast.

On-demand courses allow you to begin any day of the year, and have a full calendar year to finish. The entire course is available to work through at your own pace, with no deadlines or due dates. Statistically, most students do not do as well in an on-demand course because of the lack of structure and discipline required. If you choose an on-demand course, create a schedule for yourself and stick to it.

For highly motivated students, ASU does limit how fast you can complete an on-demand course. 1-credit courses must take at least 2 weeks, while 3 or 4 credit courses must take at least 6 weeks. If your student finishes faster, they’ll just have to wait out the time until they can close the course and receive a final grade.

HS4CC Academy students must enroll through HS4CC Academy’s course catalog.

While the decision to accept or decline outside college credit rests with each college, we have had MANY members of our groups use ASU Universal Learner Courses to earn college credit in a subject, either to bypass placement exams or to transfer in college credit and avoid the course entirely. successfully. We suggest contacting the receiving institution to see if this is an acceptable option.

HS4CC with ASU Courses Our Facebook group is comprised of over 10,000 Homeschooling for College Credit parents helping and supporting each other. Our team of leaders volunteers to ensure the community is a helpful, friendly, and valuable part of your HS4CC experience.

The ASU Syllabus Library has many recent and past course syllabi on file. These should be considered for “reference only” since your student will be required to follow the syllabus given to them by their professor on the first day of class.

Students have up to 1 year after the course ends to decide, but ASU doesn’t extend deadlines, so you should add the course to the transcript as soon as possible. When the student finishes a course, the final grade will appear within a few days. Keep checking the dashboard every few days and wait for ASU to activate the student’s transcript option button. Once the button changes to allow your student to add the course to the transcript, click the button and follow the prompts.

If you are enrolled through HS4CC Academy, you should do this immediately.

If you are enrolled independently or directly with ASU, when you click the button, you will be prompted to pay $400. You must pay $400 before the credit can be documented.

Yes and no. ASU does not offer 2-year degrees, but your student can accumulate 50% or more of the college credit that will count toward a specific ASU bachelor’s degree during high school.

Since Universal Learner Courses are not considered “transfer credit,” there is no limit to the number of Universal Learner Courses your student can use towards a degree. You will need to do the matching yourself, but ASU provides a “gold designation” for any course that can be used to meet the university’s general education requirements. Once your student has accumulated all of the credits they can using ULCs, your student can apply for undergraduate admissions. You’ll need to formally graduate your student before they can enroll, but once your student transitions to a “degree seeking” student, all of their ULCs will appear on their transcript / dashboard. From there, they will take classes online or on campus directly with ASU.

All courses appear on a regular official ASU transcript, exactly as if you were a regular ASU student.

No. Though do keep in mind that if you take a course from Arizona State University and your family lives in Vermont, it’s rather obvious that it was probably an online course. Online education is now commonplace at more than 98% of all colleges and universities in the United States, so the early stigma of online learning is not longer the norm.

If the student completed the course and earned college credit, write the course’s alphanumeric code and full title. You’ll award 1 high school credit for any 3 or 4 college credit course, and provide the letter grade. This qualifies for a weighted GPA if you like.

If your student failed, withdrew, or didn’t complete the course, do not create an entry on the homeschool transcript. You do not have to disclose this course, since ASU will not have a record of it on your student’s transcript, as they opted not to have it recorded.

The start and end dates are shown for the course and recorded during the semester in which the course was completed.

Students have the option to receive a call, verify via a DUO push, or enter a passcode from either a Text or Duo after they have logged in with their ASURITE ID and password. The authentication options menus are visible when logging into their system.

If you have a brand-new ASURITE ID, activation can take 2-4 business days.
