BIO 100: The Living World (A great 1st course!)

For families interested in starting dual enrollment with Arizona State University, BIO 100: The Living World is one of the most recommended first courses. Designed as a biology course for non-science majors, it offers students a unique and engaging way to explore science without the heavy memorization or long writing assignments common in traditional college biology classes.

What makes BIO 100 different?

BIO 100 is not a lecture-and-test course. Instead, it uses interactive, video-game style learning to teach concepts in biology. Students complete missions and activities where they demonstrate knowledge in real time rather than just recalling facts for an exam. For example:

  • Students take on the role of a mission commander traveling to Mars, where they make decisions about radiation safety, astronaut nutrition, and exercise routines.
  • Inside the cell, students deliver mRNA to ribosomes, exploring how proteins are made in a way that feels like an immersive science game.
  • In other units, students learn about cellular respiration, biodiversity, and ecology through visual, interactive modules that allow them to test and apply what they learn immediately.

There is no textbook to purchase. All information is provided through the course platform, which includes videos, simulations, and interactive assignments.

What families are saying

  • One parent with a background in teaching college biology said she was amazed at how quickly her son learned complex processes like cellular respiration through the video game format. He picked up concepts in weeks that usually took her months to teach college freshmen.
  • Another family explained that their teen loved the “Mission to Mars” unit at the end of the course. It tied together everything learned throughout the semester in an applied, problem-solving format.
  • Several students appreciated the self-paced option, which allowed them to work when motivated and slow down when needed. One teen finished the class in just two months, while another spread it out over a semester.
  • Even families with teens who had little interest in science reported success. The interactive design helped students who might normally struggle with memorization stay engaged and complete the course confidently.

A few things to know

  • BIO 100 awards 4 credits with an integrated lab
  • You’ll award 1 high school credit for this coruse.
  • The class is very interactive, so it requires a reliable computer and internet connection.
  • Some units include discussions of evolution. Families should be aware of this, although many reported that the material was presented in a neutral way.
  • Time commitment varies depending on pace. Students taking the 8-week instructor-led format should expect a heavier weekly workload. The self-paced option allows more flexibility.

Why BIO 100 is a great first ASU course

This course introduces students to biology concepts in an applied, memorable way. It avoids the intimidation of a traditional science class and instead builds confidence through interactive learning. It is especially good for teens who want to try dual enrollment but are not planning to major in science. Families who have taken BIO 100 describe it as fun, engaging, and a great way to ease into earning real college credit.
