What is the HS4CC Watch List?
This list helps you plan your Homeschooling for College Credit courses and exams so you can be sure your student doesn’t miss their window to finish a course or exam. You may also decide to accelerate your schedule or change it completely when a course or exam is set to expire. Courses and exams are generally valid for 3-year terms, but most of the time these courses are approved for another 3-year term. Since this is not always the case, we make sure you know when credits are nearing their expiration dates.
About ACE
ACE (American Council on Education) is the third-party credit evaluator hired by a business to evaluate a course or exam for college credit. ACE only evaluates learning that happens outside of a college, so college courses that happen inside a college don’t need to be evaluated because those type of credits (from a college) never expire.
About the Companies Selling College Credit
The list above contains companies that sell products that result in college credit. These products are either courses or exams. The start date indicates when ACE first evaluated this version, and the end date indicates when it will expire.
Most people refer to these types of companies as “ACE Providers” though it’s important to emphasize that ACE is a third-party hired by these companies to perform an evaluation. ACE does not themselves offer classes or exams for college credit.
Does ACE Credit Transfer?
Some colleges, not all, will award college credit earned outside a college if the credit carries an ACE evaluation. ACE credit is “ranked lower” than college credit earned from an accredited college.
So while not all colleges accept ACE evaluated credits, having ACE evaluation is the minimum a course would need for a college to even consider it. As such, if a course loses (or gives up) it’s ACE evaluation, you will not get college credit.
Even with an ACE evaluation, not every college will award college credit for learning that happened outside an accredited college.
No ACE evaluation = no college credit.
Watch List Does Not Mean Expired
Courses or exams on the Watch List mean we see their expiration date is coming up.
Expiration Date is Here
When a course or exam expires, one of 3 things will happen:
- The course or exam may be discontinued.
- The course or exam may be revised.
- The course or exam will be renewed for another 3 years.
We can’t know which of the 3 things will happen until after it does and the new information is published by ACE.
If a course or exam is being discontinued, you MUST have finished it before the discontinuation date for you to receive college credit. (Completing it after it has expired means it is not worth college credit)
If a course or exam is revised, the scope of the content may change, the credit value raised or reduced, or the level may be raised or reduced. When this happens, the old version is discontinued and a new version is created. This is the same as discontinued externally, but internally, a company may offer to migrate you to the new version. This requires a conversation with the company offering the class/exam to see how they plan to handle the situation.
If a course is renewed, nothing significant changed and you can carry on as usual.
What Usually Happens: Renewal
Usually, a course or exam that is still popular and selling well is renewed and any possible gap in the date range is back-dated by ACE to cover the students who may have completed a course or exam during the gap. In companies that have been around for a very long time, renewal usually happens and the consumer is none the wiser. If you’re in the middle of a course that renews, nothing changes.
Don’t Panic, But Take Action
A company selling college credit classes and exams loses their revenue when a course expires, so companies are HIGHLY MOTIVATED to make sure the course or exam gets renewed. The College Board sold over 4 million AP exams last year at a cost of $97 each. They have 388 million reasons to make sure their exams are always renewed.
- If you’re close to finishing the course or taking the exam, do it before the expiration date to cover yourself no matter what happens.
- If you use this company’s courses or exams in your homeschool, send them an email and make a phone call. Ask them to renew their ACE evaluation. Consumer pressure makes a huge difference!
- If you have not started the course and do not think you could finish it before expiration, sit tight and wait to see what happens before making a purchase.
ACE Tracking
You can track expiration dates by visiting the American Council on Education’s National Guide. Type in the name of the company you’re looking up, and all of their approved products will be visible. You can see the date the product was approved and when it is set to expire. ACE National Guide
