Arizona State University’ Universal Learner program uses Two-Factor Authentication for increased security when logging into its systems. Here are the quick instructions on how to navigate the process without getting locked out.
2FA stands for Two-Factor Authentication
It’s a security process that requires two different forms of identification to access an account or system:
- Something you know – like a password or PIN.
- Something you have – like a smartphone with a code or app (e.g., Duo Mobile), a hardware token, or a text message with a code.
Example:
When you log in to your ASU account:
- You enter your password (first factor),
- Then confirm a Duo push on your phone (second factor).
What is DUO Mobile?
Duo Mobile is a free smartphone and tablet app used for two-factor (or multi-factor) authentication. It works alongside ASU’s ASURITE ID to add an extra layer of login security.
ASURITE ID is your student’s ID number for taking ASU courses.
What Duo Mobile Does
- Receives Duo Push notifications—one-tap prompts to approve or deny login attempts.
- Generates time-based one-time passcodes (TOTP) for login when offline or without push.
How It’s Used at ASU
- After signing in with your ASURITE ID, Duo will challenge you with your second factor. If Duo Mobile is set up, you’ll receive a push notification to confirm your identity.
- You can also use the app’s passcodes or receive SMS/call prompts if you prefer.
- ASU requires Duo 2FA since Spring 2021—mandatory for accessing Universal Learner and Study Hall courses.
Why It’s Important
- Enhances security by ensuring logins require something you know (password) + something you have (your phone/app).
- Helps prevent unauthorized access, even if your password is compromised.
How 2FA with Duo works for ASU Universal Learner:
- You log in with your ASURITE ID and password, and then Duo prompts you for a second factor.
- Options include:
- Duo Push via the Duo Mobile app
- One-time passcodes (via app or SMS)
- Phone call to mobile or landline
- Hardware token (fob) or YubiKey
- You must reauthenticate at least every 7 days per device/browser, with some sensitive actions (like exams or financial systems) prompting 2FA each time.
What you should do:
- Ensure Duo is activated on your account (it’s mandatory for ASURITE login).
- Enroll at least two devices—such as your phone and a backup option (tablet, landline, YubiKey)—to avoid being locked out
- Experience smoother logins by using the “Remember me for 7 days” setting, where available.
