Pumpkin Spice Homeschooling and Other Misdirections

I read an article in Forbes that featured the most outlandish pumpkin spice products they could find. If you can believe that you can find pumpkin spice flavored hummus, noodles, potato chips, and… pork rinds!? That’s just…well….unnecessary. I can’t help but see the parallel between pumpkin spice everything and the latest homeschool trend.

Pumpkin spice enthusiasm aside, homeschool parents love to shop for curriculum! If you’ve ever found yourself scrolling late at night, reading glowing reviews of the latest “life-changing” program, or convincing yourself that this one will finally fix math forever… you might be doing a little Pumpkin Spice Homeschooling.

It’s not a bad thing. It’s human nature to crave something fresh and exciting. It’s also true that there might be a better program than the one you’re using, especially if you’re struggling. But here’s the thing: even the most beautifully marketed program (and trust me, it’s alllll about the marketing) can’t replace the three ingredients that actually make a homeschool great.

A Homeschool Recipe (without pumpkin spice!)

1. Consistency

The best curriculum is the one you actually use.
A consistent, steady rhythm of learning, not perfection, builds lasting results. It’s tempting to start over every time a new “must-try” resource shows up, but students thrive when they can depend on structure and progress. Every high school subject, college course, or CLEP exam requires daily follow-through. If you’ve never used a schedule, you don’t have to get ultra-strict, but high school is the doorway to adulthood, so if “schedule” is an upsetting word, try using the word “routine” instead.

2. Strong Fundamentals

Before chasing advanced programs (like college credit!), make sure your foundation is solid. The 3 Rs (reading, writing, and arithmetic)are still the core ingredients for all academic success. Without them, everything else is just fluff. When your teen has strong fundamentals, adding college credit courses or exams is smooth and natural.

3. Enthusiasm for Learning

This is the secret spice blend that makes homeschooling extraordinary. When parents stay curious, model learning, and celebrate growth, students catch that energy. Enthusiasm fuels the hard days and turns challenges into opportunities. It’s the difference between just finishing a class and loving what you’ve learned.

The HS4CC Connection

In Homeschooling for College Credit, we build on these same three ingredients. Consistency lets you stay on track through multiple subjects and semesters. Strong fundamentals ensure your teen is ready for the rigor of college work. And enthusiasm keeps the journey rewarding, not rushed.

So this fall, before adding another “limited edition” homeschool trend to your cart, ask yourself if this is “pumpkin spice” or is it progress?

Because in the end, a great homeschool doesn’t come from what’s new; it comes from what’s true. Steady effort, solid skills, and the joy of learning something every day.
