Getting Your CLEP Voucher (Free College Credit)

This 5-Minute Guide explains how Modern States works! Did you know that your teen can accumulate an unlimited amount of college credit by exam for free with a voucher from Modern States? This grant-funded program covers 100% of your teen’s CLEP costs.

A Modern States voucher is a free exam voucher provided by Modern States Education Alliance that covers the total cost of your teen’s CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) exams and test proctoring fees. (approximately $100 value)

Here are the steps:

1. Create an account at Modern States. learn.modernstates.org
2. Choose a class from the Prep Course Catalog.
3. Enroll and complete the course. View the videos (or read the transcripts) and answer all of the practice questions. You can view your progress in the class by choosing the progress tab at the top of the screen.

   

When you’ve completed the course, you’ll see a screen like this:

1. Step-by-step instructions to request a voucher
2. Log in to your Modern States account (at learn.modernstates.org)
3. Complete your Modern States course including all Check for Understandings and the Final exam.  You must score 75% or higher to request a voucher. Learners have the ability to retake a quiz/check for understanding or final exam as many times as they would like.
4. Once you pass the Final Exam with a score of 75% or higher, the “CLEP Voucher Request” module will become visible. 
5. Within the “CLEP Voucher Request” module, you’ll click the blue “Request a CLEP Voucher” button.
6. Your request has been received and you will receive updates on your voucher request within 2 business days via email.
7. Register for the CLEP exam using the voucher number you received. Add the voucher number at the checkout (see the image below). Your total will be $0. Print the CLEP Exam Registration Ticket. Bring this to the testing center.

   

8. Make an appointment at your local testing center to take the exam OR at home using remote proctoring (age 13+ required for remote proctoring). Your Exam Registration Ticket expires six months from the date you order it. You can take the exam any time before it expires.
9. Take the CLEP exam.
10. Testing Center Proctoring Fees. If you are taking your exam at home (age 13+ only) your testing center fees are covered during the check out. There is no further action needed. If, however, you’re going to a physical testing center to take the exam, you will need to bring the Exam Registration Ticket, a valid ID, and money for the test center fee. After you pay your testing center, Modern States will reimburse you the fee. You must submit a reimbursement request for the test center fee. You will need to attach a copy of your score report and the test center fee receipt in addition to providing the CLEP voucher number you used.

FAQ

Is Modern State a good homeschool curriculum?

No, Modern States is a test prep course. While some students, especially adults who already graduated high school, can probably learn enough to pass the test, if you’re awarding homeschool high school credit, the HS4CC Best Practices guide suggests using homeschool high school curriculum first, and then add Modern States prep content to enhance your course. The Modern States content will fill in any gaps and generate a voucher to pay for the exam.

How long does it take to complete a Modern States course and get the voucher?

If your student has already learned a subject well, completing the prep course should be quick and painless. Usually, a week or two is all that is needed.

Do I record a Modern States on our homeschool transcript?

No, a Modern States prep course is less than 20 hours of content when watched on regular video speed. Best practices, such as incorporating CLEP prep, practice tests, and other college-level learning into a high school course, do provide a solid justification for bumping a course from “regular” to “honors.”

Can I get another voucher if my teen fails their CLEP?

Yes. Modern States does not limit the number of vouchers you can receive. CLEP does require a 90-day waiting period between retakes.
