What Is Homeschooling for College Credit (HS4CC)? A Beginner’s Guide

If you’re a homeschool parent wondering how your teen can earn college credit while still in high school, you’re in the right place. Homeschooling for College Credit (HS4CC) is a revolutionary way to combine homeschooling with real college credit, helping your teen save time, save money, and build a powerful academic portfolio before graduation.

At its core, HS4CC is a strategy. It’s not a specific curriculum or program—it’s a way of resourcefully planning your homeschool program to bring in college credit where it makes sense. It empowers you, the parent, to choose affordable and flexible college credit options that count both for high school and college. Think of it like earning two-for-one credits: your teen completes one class, but it counts on both transcripts.

So, what does this look like in real life?

Homeschooling for College Credit can include one type of college credit or many. We talk about all the types, but there is no “perfect” type of college credit- rather we teach that the best type of college credit for your teen is the one that brings the goal post closer.

Some examples of college credit types include CLEP exams, Advanced Placement Exams, dual enrollment courses (also called dual credit courses), online or in-person college classes, or even nontraditional credits through ACE/NCCRS evaluated companies like Sophia, Study.com, and more.

Each family creates their custom blend of options depending on the teen’s academic ability, motivation, and goals. And unlike traditional school settings, homeschoolers have the autonomy to hand-select the best-fit resources—secular or religious, basic or advanced, academic or practical.

Here’s where HS4CC shines: we help you accomplish your goals – our expertise is in “how” to bring in credits with wisdom. Whether you’re brand new to homeschooling or a seasoned pro, you don’t need a special background to get started. Parents across the country are learning how to integrate college-level opportunities into their homeschool programs—sometimes starting as early as 9th or 10th grade, in other cases it’s closer to graduation in 11th or 12th grade. You decide when your teen is ready, how fast you move, and how much college credit makes sense.

And readiness isn’t just about academics. The very first stage of HS4CC is what we call the Spark Stage. This is about helping your teen build confidence. We recommend starting with three carefully chosen classes that are most likely to result in a positive outcome. Early success is key to building momentum and engagement.

Most HS4CC teens graduate high school with 30-45 college credits under their belt. Some go even further—completing full associate degrees or bachelor’s degrees by the time they’re 18. Others simply take a handful of credits and apply them after high school. No path is “better”—only what’s right for your teen.

You might be wondering, “But what about cost?” We don’t charge anything- we are a nonprofit organization led by expert volunteers. Most of us are on a budget, so we talk a lot about costs! In every case, taking college classes during high school will be less expensive than taking them after, so for some parents this is part of how they plan to keep their teens from student loan debt. Our community helps parents discover and evaluate these options every day—maximizing value while minimizing student debt. In fact, using HS4CC strategies often saves families tens of thousands of dollars compared to traditional college pathways.

Since 2012, Homeschooling for College Credit has helped over 75,000 families across all 50 states navigate this process with confidence. We’re a nonprofit organization made up of passionate parents and volunteers who believe you should be in the driver’s seat of your teen’s education—not pushed aside.

So, welcome! You’re not alone. We invite you to explore our free resources, join our Facebook communities, and start planning your teen’s first three college credits. Let’s spark success together.
